GST Registration in Bangalore

Bangalore, Karnataka+91 9176044244

GST registration in Bangalore is made online on the GST portal in Form GST REG-01, and the government charges no fee. A Karnataka business must register once its aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services, or from its first supply if section 24 of the CGST Act applies. The officer must decide within 7 working days (Rule 9 of the CGST Rules), or within 3 working days under the simplified Rule 14A scheme. V Viswanathan & Associates (FRN 013713S) files GST registrations for Bangalore businesses from its Chennai office, by video consultation.

Each new Karnataka registration is allotted either to the State, through the Commercial Taxes Department of Karnataka, or to the Centre, through the Central Tax commissionerates of the Bengaluru zone. Under the GST Council Secretariat's Circular No. 01/2017 (20 September 2017), taxpayers with turnover below ₹1.5 crore are divided 90% to the State and 10% to the Centre, and those above it 50:50. The authority you are allotted handles verification, notices and refunds.

Aggregate turnover is worked out on an all-India basis for every registration under the same PAN, and includes exempt supplies and exports but not the GST itself (section 2(6)). Below the threshold you may still register voluntarily, which lets you claim input tax credit and invoice business customers who want it, but every return and compliance obligation then applies.

How is the application made and approved?

How the application is made and approved

  • Part A: PAN, mobile number and e-mail are verified by OTP on the GST portal, and a temporary reference number (TRN) is generated.
  • Part B: Business details, promoters or directors, authorised signatory, principal and additional places of business, and the HSN or SAC codes of the goods or services are filed in Form GST REG-01 with the documents, and the principal place of business is pinned on the portal map.
  • Aadhaar authentication: The promoters and authorised signatory complete Aadhaar authentication by OTP. An application flagged on data analysis and risk parameters is followed by biometric Aadhaar authentication, a photograph and a check of the original documents at a GST Suvidha Kendra (Rule 8(4A)); an applicant who does not opt for Aadhaar authentication completes the photograph and document check there. In Karnataka, GST Suvidha Kendras began these appointments in September 2024.
  • Officer's decision: The officer grants the registration, or issues a query in Form GST REG-03, within 7 working days (Rule 9). The time is 30 days where Aadhaar authentication fails or is not opted for, or where the application is flagged for, or the officer orders, a physical verification of the premises (Rule 25). If the officer does not act in time, the registration is deemed approved.
  • Certificate: On approval the GSTIN and the registration certificate in Form GST REG-06 are issued on the portal. Bank account details are added within the time Rule 10A allows: within 30 days of the grant of registration, or before filing GSTR-1 or the invoice furnishing facility, whichever is earlier.

Since 1 November 2025 (Notification No. 18/2025-Central Tax) an applicant whose output tax on supplies to registered persons, counting CGST, SGST, IGST and cess together, will not exceed ₹2.5 lakh a month can opt for the simplified registration under Rule 14A. Aadhaar authentication is compulsory and registration is granted within 3 working days; only one such registration is allowed per PAN in a state. To go above the limit, the taxpayer withdraws from the scheme in Form GST REG-32 after filing returns for at least one tax period. Separately, Rule 9A grants registration electronically within 3 working days to applicants the portal identifies on data analysis and risk parameters.

What Bangalore Businesses Usually Need

Software, SaaS and IT-enabled services exporters

A supply of services is an export only if the supplier is in India, the recipient is outside India, the place of supply is outside India, payment is received in convertible foreign exchange (or in Indian rupees where the RBI permits), and the two are not merely establishments of the same person (section 2(6) of the IGST Act). Exporters file a letter of undertaking for each financial year and claim refunds of unutilised input tax credit under section 54(3).

Multi-state companies and capability centres

A company with offices in several states holds a separate GSTIN in each, and each registration is a distinct person (section 25(4)), so services one office provides to another can be taxable supplies. From 1 April 2025 an office that receives invoices for input services on behalf of branches in other states must register as an Input Service Distributor and distribute that credit (sections 2(61), 20 and 24(viii), as amended by the Finance Act, 2024), so we set up the ISD registration alongside the regular ones.

Startups below the threshold

Many early-stage startups register voluntarily because enterprise customers want a GSTIN on the invoice and input tax credit on cloud, hardware and professional services is otherwise lost. A new company can apply for GST in the SPICe+ incorporation filing itself; see company registration in Bangalore.

Online sellers

Selling goods through an online marketplace or other e-commerce operator ordinarily requires registration from the first sale (section 24(ix)). Since 1 October 2023 small sellers whose turnover is below the threshold may sell goods within Karnataka through an operator that collects tax at source, without registering, if they make no inter-state supply, operate from one state and obtain an enrolment number on the portal with their PAN (Notification No. 34/2023-Central Tax). Selling to other states still requires a GSTIN.

What has to be done after registration?

Regular taxpayers file GSTR-1 for outward supplies and GSTR-3B for tax payment, monthly, or quarterly under the QRMP scheme if aggregate turnover is up to ₹5 crore. The annual return GSTR-9 is optional up to ₹2 crore of turnover, and a self-certified reconciliation statement GSTR-9C is required above ₹5 crore. E-invoicing applies above ₹5 crore of turnover, and an e-way bill is needed to move goods worth more than ₹50,000. Changes to the business must be reported in REG-14 within 15 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the turnover limit for GST registration in Bangalore?

A Karnataka business supplying only goods must register once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh in a financial year, and one supplying services once it crosses ₹20 lakh (section 22 of the CGST Act). Aggregate turnover counts all supplies made under the same PAN across India. Inter-state sellers of goods, persons paying tax under reverse charge and some others must register whatever their turnover (section 24).

How long does GST registration take in Bangalore?

The officer must approve the application or raise a query within 7 working days (Rule 9 of the CGST Rules), or within 30 days where Aadhaar authentication is not done or a physical verification is ordered. Applicants opting for the simplified scheme under Rule 14A (output tax up to ₹2.5 lakh a month on supplies to registered persons) are approved within 3 working days, with Aadhaar authentication compulsory.

What documents are needed for GST registration in Bangalore?

PAN of the business; PAN, Aadhaar and photographs of the proprietor, partners or directors; proof of the principal place of business (property tax receipt, electricity bill, or the rent or co-working agreement with the owner's consent and proof); the partnership deed, LLP agreement or certificate of incorporation; a board resolution or letter appointing the authorised signatory. Bank account details can be added within 30 days of registration (Rule 10A).

Is there a government fee for GST registration?

No. The GST portal charges no fee for a new registration, an amendment or a cancellation.

Can I use a co-working space or home address in Bangalore for GST registration?

Yes, with the co-working agreement or the owner's consent letter and their proof of ownership or electricity bill. The officer may order a physical verification of the premises (Rule 25), and the registration certificate and GSTIN must be displayed at the premises once granted (Rule 18), so the address must be one where you actually carry on business.

Does a Bangalore company need a separate GSTIN for other states?

Yes. Registration is state-wise: a separate GSTIN is needed in every state or union territory from which you make taxable supplies (section 25(1)). Additional offices or warehouses within Karnataka are added to the Karnataka GSTIN as additional places of business.

Do you have an office in Bangalore?

No. We serve Bangalore clients from our office at Spencer Plaza, Anna Salai, Chennai, through video consultations, secure document sharing and digitally signed filings.
